Cat Cafe: From Tokyo to Cleveland

Most kids love animals and E, B and A are no exception. E especially adores animals and is so tender with them. Ever since she was a little thing she has been loving to all creatures. I remember a black beetle-looking bug got into her kiddie pool and she named it “Mr. Shiny.” That bugger ended up pinching her during it’s rescue from drowning. And don’t forget the cockroach she played with at our rental on North Captiva Island. She never saw a bird, a pooch, a squirrel, etc that she didn’t love. And then we got our own two fuzzle pets and it’s clear she’s the favorite.

We knew she would love the animal cafes in Tokyo. On our first full day we cruised through Harajuku & loved on cats, owls and even snakes! Read more about our animal cafe experience in Harajuku  here. E was over the moon in kitty heaven at Mocha Cat Cafe. This cafe was in the heart of Harajuku located right on Takeshita street.

It’s almost been a year since we traveled to Japan. We were super pumped to see that an animal cafe was opening in our own backyard! Affogato cat cafe opened it’s doors January 2, 2019 and is located the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland. We immediately made reservations and it turned out the first time that would work out was Valentine’s Day. So, it was set: a family date to a cat cafe on February 14.

The front part of the cafe is a comfortable cat-free area with a barista and seating. There is a large window with a view of the cat area. You can stop by this area anytime to relax and caffeinate. There are sweet treats and drinks with cute kitty themed names.

To enter the cat portion we booked a reservation. Weekday, one hour sessions were $10. Once inside,  you can hang out, drink your coffee and interact with the sweet kitties.

Overall we loved both experiences. Mocha cafe in Japan had more kitties and you could feed them! Affogato cafe was much more affordable & had a full functioning cafe with espresso drinks. Plus, at Affogato cafe most of these kitties are available for adoption!
