South Iceland with Kids- KEF to VIK

Hello! It’s time to share details of our recent trip to Iceland. I was weirdly hesitant to go back to a place we’ve already traveled. That’s just not us! We like to explore new places and try new things! But, Iceland just pulled us back. First of all, it’s really just magical enough to warrant a second trip. Secondly, the stars just aligned- right price, right time, right flights. I figured if you want to travel as much as possible, you have to go with what works. Of course I ended up learning that no two trips are the same. We had a spectacular experience.
This trip we wanted to devote a good amount of time to the south coast of Iceland. Our flight landed around 5am local time. We picked up our rental car and were on the road not long after touching down. Once you get on Rt 1, there’s nothing complicated about the directions. Every major stop will be along this famous road and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery as it passes by. Since it was November it was dark for the first few hours. Just under 1.5 hours away is Selfoss, a cute little town with shops and places to eat. We stopped at Guðnabakarí for some deliciously fresh bakery items.
Back on the road (still dark) and we drove an hour to Seljalandsfoss. The light slowly increased over the hour and by the time we arrived there was full light. We had visited this waterfall in 2016 but for sure it is worth a visit every time. I mean, walking behind a powerful waterfall? That doesn’t get old.
Twenty-five minutes down the road is Skogafoss. Again, this was a repeat but it’s an easy stop to get up close and personal with a magnificent waterfall. Waterproof clothing helps you embrace the significant mist of the falls but not leave you wet the rest of the day.
We hopped back on the road and enjoyed the majesty of nature outside our window on our way to Vik. Our first stop was Dyrholaey. This part took a little off roading action to drive up the mountain and boy, was it worth it. The vista is the beautiful black sand beach, the roaring white & blue ocean and a natural bridge with hole to the beach.

It was time to refuel. We cruised into adorable Vik and lunched at Smiðjan Brugghús. The food was very tasty and much needed. We loved the atmosphere. It wasn’t the best beer I had on our trip and a bit of some sticker shock but it hit the spot. By this time the kiddos were tiiiiired. Poor B was nodding off waiting for his food. I could feel it too.
Before heading off to our cabin for the night we scooted over the Reynisfjara Beach. Although this was a bit crowded it was still worth it. Up close and personal (not too personal luckily) with the ocean roaring onto the black sand, we explored the famous basalt columns and caves.
Stay tuned for more of our Iceland adventures including our out-of-this-world cabin, glaciers and more!
